DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce nursing students to advanced nursing skills which are related to the administration of intravenous drugs and fluids. Students will be taught these skills through a theoretical introduction followed up by practical and hands on demonstrations in a simulated environment in the clinical labs.

Topics that will be discussed include:
- Principles of IV Rx administration;
- Infection prevention and control related to IV care;
- Administering IV medications (bolus, infusion, volumetric);
- IV calculations;
- Care of long lines (central lines);
- Total Parenteral Nutrition;
- Administering blood transfusion;
- Administering chemotherapy;
- Care of the patient with a venous cannula;
- Setting up and administering an IVI;
- Blood Cultures; and
- Phlebotomy and venous cannulation.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of this study-unit is to enable the student to perform advanced nursing skills related to IV therapy under the direct supervision of a qualified staff nurse.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Attain knowledge of advanced nursing skills;
- Relate the practice of nursing skills to anatomy and physiology and common medical/surgical conditions; and
- Link theoretical knowledge to the performance of clinical skills.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Perform advanced skills safely under supervision.
