DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to introduce the student to perioperative nursing supported by applied anatomy and physiology. The major focus will be on the intraoperative component of nursing care. The study-unit will include an orientation of the theatre layout. The peroperative nursing role and responsibilities, principles and practice of disinfection, sterilisation and other infection control practices relevant to the area, risks and safety hazards in the operating department, surgical technique, teamwork and ethical issues.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide students with the core knowledge and psychomotor and communication skills needed to care for individuals in the peri operative context.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Demonstrate a sound knowledge base of perioperative nursing care in order that students will be able to participate safely and effectively in the delivery of therapeutic and holistic peri operative care within the context of a multi disciplinary team.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Demonstrate the psychomotor, clinical, technical and communication skills in order to be an effective participant of care within the operating department from the time of receiving the patients up to their transfer back to the respective unit. Acquire competence in practice within the theatre setting. Acquire critical thinking skills relating to the assessment, planning and delivery of care within the theatre setting.
