DESCRIPTION This study-unit will consist of a practical placement within the operating department. The placement will be structured in such a way as to facilitate and consolidate the delivery of theoretical principles and their application to practice in the operating department. This will give the student the chance to actually assess, plan, implement and evaluate care within the context of the operating department.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to prepare students for clinical exposure and supervised practice within the peri operative environment. This will give students the opportunity to strengthen and develop psychomotor skills related to this clinical area as well as to enhance their potential for personal growth through working and collaborating with trained personnel in the variety of settings available within the operating department.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge base of peri operative care which is necessary in order to participate safely and effectively in the delivery of therapeutic and holistic peri operative care within the context of a multi disciplinary team.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to practice the requisite psychomotor, clinical, technical and communication skills in order to be an efficient participant in the delivery of care within the operating department from the time of receiving patients up to their transfer back to the respective unit.
