DESCRIPTION This study-unit includes an overview on the basic principles of resuscitation, including chest compressions and endotracheal intubation. The students will also be exposed to special considerations, including resuscitation of babies born preterm and the ethics involved at the end of life.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to enable students to further develop their skills and knowledge in neonatal resuscitation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Discuss basic theories regarding asphyxia and resuscitation efforts;
Be able to problem solve resuscitation needs for a given scenario as a member of a resuscitation team;
Discuss Phased-Response Format (ACLS);
Discuss the use of critique post-resuscitation using the;
Evaluate and take decisions to improve quality of care.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Prepare the correct resuscitation equipment as required in emergencies;
Use the correct resuscitation techniques for a given case situation;
Select the adequate masks with the correct seal and be able to solve the problem if the seal is inadequate;
Perform two methods of chest compressions on a baby manikin at a rate of 120 per minute or 90 per minute for combined resuscitation efforts.
