TITLE Clinical Skills for Community Nurses

DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives students the opportunity to look into the latest research pertaining to nursing clinical skills and enables them to develop evidenced-based knowledge. Although the students who are following this study-unit are already qualified nurses, the study-unit seeks to give them the opportunity to read and learn about the latest knowledge, which is continuously being updated through research, and help them to transfer such updated knowledge into their clinical practice.

Provided the particular environment of the community setting, this study-unit also offers the students to discuss practical and safe ways of performing these skills within such a setting. This is achieved through:
- Critical evaluation of latest literature;
- Communicating with various professionals, including nurses, who own an expertise in particular clinical skills such as tissue viability nurses; where available;
- Sharing of knowledge obtained from these two sources to act as a multiplier effect in enhancing evidence-based practice.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to enable students develop updated knowledge about the practice of several nursing skills that are particular to the community setting. Amongst these are:
- Wound Management (including post-operative wounds, chronic wounds and burns);
- In/Continence Care;
- Administration of drugs, including inhalation therapy;
- Oxygen Therapy;
- Care of a Naso-Gastric Tube and a PEG;
- Stoma Care;
- Documentation and Record Keeping.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe and discuss the salient points in maintaining patient safety when performing each of the above mentioned clinical nursing skills;
- Utilise evidence-based knowledge to critically evaluate their practice when performing such clinical nursing skills;
- Evaluate the various settings within the community and identify resources that can assist them to perform safe clinical nursing skills.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Actively participate in clinical nursing skills within various community settings, in a way that brings closer the theory-practice gap;
- Identify and address issues, both practical and otherwise, that may assist them in maintaining safety when performing clinical nursing skills in the community;
- Act as role models to other nurses and other health care professionals when performing clinical nursing skills.
