DESCRIPTION The study-unit will explore the procedure for enforcing human rights before national, regional and international structures such as the ombudsman, the equality commissions, the committees set up under UN Conventions and EU structures. Studies will focus on a study of the procedures that are to be followed in seeking redress from the mentioned structures and on an analysis of the political systems that seek to protect and promote human rights and prevent their violation.

Study-Unit Aims:

To study the non-judicial procedures set up under international conventions and national laws which provide non-judicial redress to human rights violations and often initiate political processes that prevent the occurrence of human rights violations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse the procedures by which claims of violations of human rights may be redressed through non-judicial procedures;
- Identify and match relevant procedures to human rights issues to seek the protection of human rights or advocate for their promotion and for policy changes.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Draft relative reporting documents;
- Critique the effectiveness or otherwise of non-judicial procedures for the enforcement of human rights;
- Identify the correct procedure applicable to different human rights claims.
