| DESCRIPTION | This unit aims to equip students with a better understanding of the practice of youth ministry in our local context and how to be available for young people that are often already marginalized or at risk of becoming so. When dealing with young people with challenges one of the places to equip young people practising youth ministry is the 'care of self'. The unit will proceed from what is perceived as acquiring a deeper understanding of the young people's lives in a multidimensional manner, to looking at how they become integrated into the social structures where they live and work, By using a missional approach to Pastoral Youth ministry, this unit will allow students to become better aware of those aspects of young people's lives that are already subject to challenging situations and would provide them with the knowledge and skills to be better equipped for an inclusive approach within their respective youth ministry practices. Creating safe boundaries for young people to grow in is imperative, that today even more cannot be overlooked. Through this unit, participants will be brought closer to the center of the church as communion. To do this participants will learn about the symbols and mysteries that are associated with the liturgical life of the Church. Finally, the unit will equip participants with a vision of who youth are as prophets in a modern world, and what their participation in God's plan for their lives and for the lives of others is. Study-unit Aims: The main aim of this study-unit will be to run a program for youth leaders, youth pastoral workers and youth workers, in the field of youth ministry/work, to equip them with the right knowledge, skills and values for helping the young people they work with. The study-unit will enable youth leaders, youth pastoral workers and youth workers to competently handle situations themselves, and when to divulge sensitive information to other professionals. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a. Perceive youth from a multifaceted lens and as part of a complex multidimensional system; b. Conceptualise and grasp different dynamics of (problems faced by youth) youth problems related to various life situations; c. Recognise legislation related to safety of young people, protection of minors, safeguarding, and criminal offenses caused by and among young people, and care orders and parental authority; d. Recognise the signs and symptoms of a crisis (and of how a youth leader, youth pastoral worker and youth worker ought to respond in such situations). 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a. Assess situations requiring immediate intervention; b. Support the creation of inclusive care plans for young people within youth groups; c. Assess for safety hazards in places where youth gather.
