DESCRIPTION The first part of this study-unit will introduce the students to the Gospel of John. It will examine the central issues of John's narrative and engages with narrative and historical approaches, the two dominant methods used in interpreting John's Gospel. It will seek to illustrate how John seems widely accessible on a superficial level, yet it is a gospel that demands a great deal if one is to read it perceptively.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide students with the necessary tools to perceive how the Gospel of John displays a self-conscious use of symbolism and its religious function.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

It will show that in order to understand this gospel, it is not enough to understand questions related to its author, date, and the historical reality in which it was written; one must also understand its language. This unit will therefore categorize, explain, and illuminate the figurative and the relationship language that extend across the narrative of the Fourth Gospel.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

This unit will provide students with a thorough orientation to the Gospel of John. It will lead students into the literary, historical, and theological facets of this gospel. It will also provide an overview of key contributions in Johannine scholarship.
