TITLE Management and Leadership in Social Welfare

DESCRIPTION This study- unit is related to the context of a social welfare service delivery unit or agency in which there are persons taking up a managerial role, especially where social workers are among the workers. Skills and techniques required in various situations will be identified, and conceptual frameworks for analysis and action will be explored. Practice through class exercises and case studies will be provided throughout the unit.

This study- unit will look at what a manager within social welfare services does. The definitive works in the literature about management will be explored and discussed. The differences between management and leadership will be investigated. Emotional intelligence and transformational leadership will be the foundational tenets from within which students will learn to operate as leaders.

Knowledge and Understanding:
By the end of this study- unit, students will be able to:

- describe the theoretical and practical differences between management and leadership;
- describe the process of effective project management;
- explain the tenets of transformational leadership;
- recognize their personal leadership style;
- explain the importance of emotional intelligence for leadership.

Skills:
By the end of this study- unit, students will be able to:

- given a case scenario, analyze key managerial issues in the social welfare field;
- given a case study, propose appropriate managerial solutions to various situations which arise in a social welfare agency;
- apply different leadership theories and styles to case scenarios;
- plan a project;
- perform emotionally intelligent leadership roles.
