TITLE Simultaneous Interpretation (English / Foreign Language to Maltese)

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 12

DEPARTMENT Translation, Terminology and Interpreting Studies

DESCRIPTION Students will be able to provide a fluent and effective simultaneous interpretation of speeches in English or another Foreign Language of at least 10-12 minutes duration into the target language (Maltese), accurately reproducing the content of the original and using appropriate terminology and register. While these skills will be built on the same kind as those used to practise consecutive interpretation, additional exercises specifically designed to establish and consolidate the skills will be required. Furthermore, students will be trained in booth techniques and team interaction. Speeches used will confront the students with a diversity of subject areas, styles, and registers, and their length, information density and degree of technicality and specificity will increase as the study-unit progresses. Once they have acquired simultaneous interpreting skills, students must also be taught how to interpret with the text in front of them.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Teach the students the skills they need to interpret simultaneously in institutional settings and beyond, both on site and remotely;
- Prepare the students to work as interpreters in conference settings and beyond.
