DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed for students who are interested in an introduction to translation and interpreting through a combination of theoretical lectures and hands-on practical exercises. The students will be taught the basics of audio-visual, literary and technical translation, as well as consecutive and simultaneous interpretation. The study-unit includes an introduction to the principles of both disciplines, supplemented with hands-on exercises such as translating short excerpts from texts of both a general and literary nature, basic subtitling and/or voice-over tasks, consecutive note-taking and memory exercises, sight translation (interpreting a written text from the page), and practice in interpreting booths.

The study-unit is open to students who are proficient in any two (or more) of the following languages: English, Maltese, Italian, French, Spanish, German and Dutch. There is no need for a degree in languages but a sound knowledge of at least two of the languages listed above is a must. The main focus of the unit is not on language but rather on technique. Preference shall be given to students with Maltese as a first language.

The study-unit is open to a maximum of 12 students.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Make the students aware of the different translation and interpretation modes and techniques
- Introduce the students to translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation through basic
exercises
- Illustrate the skills required to study translation and interpretation at a more advanced level

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Translate short texts in different genres and registers;
- Identify the primary audiovisual translation modalities;
- Define key terms in translation and interpreting;
- Describe basic strategies used in the translation of different text types;
- Apply basic language technologies used in translation;
- Interpret short written speeches from the page;
- Apply basic consecutive note-taking techniques to short speeches;
- Interpret short speeches consecutively (i.e. by relying on notes and memory) and simultaneously (i.e. in the booth);
- Define the basic skills required to study translation and interpreting at a more advanced level.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Refine their pubic speaking and writing skills so as to convey messages in clear and precise manner;
- Hone their analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Enhance their confidence in both speaking and in writing;
- Increase their awareness of cultural contexts and sensitivities, as well as ethical issues in spoken and written communication;
- Apply basic translation, subtitling, voice-over and interpretation principles.
