DESCRIPTION This study-unit takes into consideration the impact of Neo-Classicism and Academism, Romanticism and Eclecticism, the Nazarenes and the Purists and Verismo on the works of local and foreign artists working in Malta in the 19th cent. It focuses on the manifestation of the Greek Revival, Nazarene and Purist art and its dominance in mid-century, and discusses the shift towards Italian art and Verismo in the late decades of the century. Important links forged with foreign centres, in particular London, Rome and Paris, will be examined.

The main local exponents in Malta such as the painters Pietro Paolo Caruana, Salvatore Busuttil, Giuseppe Hyzler, Michele Bellanti, Giuseppe Calì and Lazzaro Pisani, the Dimech sculptors, and the architects Giuseppe Bonavia, Emanuele Luigi Galizia and Nicola Zammit will be discussed. Lectures will also consider the important corpus of works by Italian artists such as Pietro Gagliardi, Francesco Grandi and Domenico Bruschi. Topographical and landscape painting will also be considered.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit seeks to understand the character of artistic production in Malta during a century which brought about deep artistic, social and political changes within the larger context of European art.
