| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide a moderated forum for discussion on developments in pharmacology. Through this unit students will achieve scientific thinking and presentation skills, and have the opportunity to develop a logical and deductive approach to problem solving in scientific research. This will be done through participation at moderated research seminars, journal clubs (group discussions of selected published papers) and attendance at conferences Study-unit aims: This study-unit will provide a moderated forum for discussion on developments in various aspects of pharmacology. Through this unit students will achieve scientific thinking and presentation skills, and have the opportunity to develop a logical and deductive approach to problem solving in scientific research. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of this study-unit, the student will be able to: - understand various aspects of developments in pharmacology. - develop scientific thinking and presentation skills - obtain a logical and deductive approach to problem solving in scientific research - assess and criticize scientific articles in pharmacology 2. Skills By the end of this study-unit, the student will be able to: - Apply knowledge of the pharmacology of drugs to understanding new developments in pharmacological research and clinical scenarios - Apply scientific pharmacological principles in novel drug research - Explain concepts in scientific published artucles which refer to differing drug therapies Main texts: - Scientific abstracts and papers related to the seminars in question, provided to the students from time to time Students are expected to search through literature databases on their own initiative, in order to identify relevant published material and use this as supplementary reading. |
