TITLE Philosophical Notions of the Sanskrit Grammar 2

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Philosophy

DESCRIPTION This study-unit necessarily follows from the studies started in PHI 2117. The philological exploration will continue. We will look at case and verb/sentence structures. The translation and composition of Sanskrit will continue of course.

Since this is a Philosophy unit I shall further examine and continue to explore the Philosophy (Darshan) inherent in Panini’s exposition of the Sanskrit language in his Ashtadhyayi, its history and structures, logic and its linguistic and philosophical representations.

Study-unit Aims:

As with PHI2117 besides enhancing students' necessary reading and writing skills, I aim in this unit, to equip them and further their ability to approach and appreciate the language with an eye on the philosophical notions supporting the Sanskrit vyakarana view.

Thus this class rather than being primarily philological is philosophical, examining the Indo/European Sanskrit, and its philosophical roots and structures to be precise.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe Sanskrit grammar (classify verbs, describe the tense systems, recognize nominal inflections, identify personal pronouns).
- Demonstrate, examine and appreciate the philosophical implications of Sanskrit grammar.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recite verses from the Upanishad and the Bhagavad Gita.
- Understand and be able to analyze their word structures and sentence formations.
- Hopefully attempt a translation in the light of the supporting darshan (philosophy).
