DAI: Developing an AI-assisted Italian Language Teaching and Learning System
Erasmus+ Program – Key Action 2 – KA220 – Cooperation partnerships in Higher Education
Project Number: 2025-1-DE01-KA220-HED-000359277
Project Summary
Background
Current language learning tools often lack AI-driven adaptive systems, offering a "one-size-fits-all" approach.
This project will integrate AI to create personalized learning paths, shifting the focus to fostering critical thinking and evaluative skills.
It addresses the need for digital competencies among teachers and policymakers by providing training and will create a learner corpus to support further research on AI in language education.
Main Aim
- To provide Italian language teachers with a training package on the potential of AI in language education, with a focus on Italian language learning (a prototype that can be replicated in the learning paths of other languages).
Specific aims
- Enhance teachers' knowledge of AI driven language learning tools, including automated assessment, predictive analytics, and adaptive learning technologies.
- Develop teachers' competencies in integrating machine learning based recommendations, speech synthesis, and real time error correction into their teaching practices.
- Strengthen teachers' ability to use AI powered chatbots, virtual tutors, and speech recognition tools for interactive language instruction.
- Equip teachers with skills to design customized language exercises tailored to learners' needs.
- Enable teachers to effectively utilize machine translation tools to enhance students' translation skills through comparative analysis.
Target Groups
The two direct target groups of the project are:
- Academic teachers of Italian as Foreign Language (FL)
- International academic students interested in studying Italian
Results
The project's primary outcomes are:
- A teacher training course on AI's use in Italian language learning, teaching, and assessment;
- An AI-driven online learning platform with interactive modules for developing linguistic and cultural skills;
- A repository of AI-based resources featuring a personalized chatbot for content retrieval
- A learner corpus derived from student interactions within the online course.
