Through collaborative modes of production and mediation and critical pedagogies that engage young and adult learners, we seek to help to redefine the role of the arts and culture in society through the lens of education.
One of the Arts Master’s degrees that the Arts, Open Communities and Adult Education offers is the MTL in Drama Education. The MTL Drama Ed. study units consist of a combination of workshops, demonstrations, and lectures about drama education, its benefits and effects on learners, both individually in their personal and social development, as well as on the class as a team.
Students will learn about models for the planning and teaching of process drama and drama-in-education. The MTL Drama study units are run by diverse theatre practitioners, academics and educators specialised in Drama Education, and you will have the opportunity to observe and be mentored by experienced drama specialists within schools where Drama is firmly established as a subject. While this study route focusses mainly on drama education and theatre practice across curricular and co-curricular contexts for schools, it also includes lectures and workshops in applied theatre for work within different communities. The MTL is designed for those who have theatre studies/performing degree and are now looking to take their knowledge into the classroom and beyond to work in spaces or with groups of people within different communities.
In terms of employability, you will gain the knowledge, skills and experience to teach drama from early years through to Sec and MATSEC and also do applied theatre work within communities. With the introduction of the Drama Sec exam, which Year 9 students will start preparing for this year, there will be the need for more Drama teachers to teach the subject in State schools as well as private and independent schools. If you believe Drama should be part of every young person’s life then join us and become a Drama teacher!
