MSc Literacy and Numeracy in Neurodiverse Profiles

Programme Description

The Master of Science in Literacy and Numeracy aims to provide the opportunity to acquire advanced knowledge in the domains of literacy, numeracy, and neurodiversity through current literature, research, and evidence-based practice. The programme includes a strong applied component, offering opportunities for authentic learning and collaborative professional engagement across educational and clinical settings.

The programme of studies for the M.Sc. in Literacy and Numeracy, which we offer at the University of Malta, leads to a qualification comparable to that of other European postgraduate programmes addressing specific learning needs and educational support in multilingual societies, and is aligned with international developments in inclusive education and learning support.

This postgraduate degree integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, enabling students to refine their intervention practices and develop competence in supporting literacy and numeracy development in neurodiverse learners. Candidates are required to already hold a professional warrant or licence in their respective field (such as education, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, or psychology), and this programme is designed to further enhance their existing expertise, confidence, and professional skillset.

If you have graduated in a relevant area within the human or educational sciences and wish to advance your expertise in supporting literacy and numeracy development across diverse educational and clinical contexts, then this is the ideal programme for you.

What career opportunities lie ahead?

Awareness of literacy and numeracy difficulties, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and broader language-based learning needs, has grown significantly in recent years. Schools, clinics, and support services increasingly require professionals who can design and implement multisensory interventions while also considering neurodiversity, bilingualism, and multicultural factors. Career opportunities exist within mainstream and specialist schooling, learning support services, clinical educational settings, NGOs, policy environments, and private practice. The need for trained professionals in literacy and numeracy support represents an important educational and public health priority nationally and internationally.
