Applications are invited for the post of Systems Engineer in the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering within the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology. The selected candidate is expected to support the teaching and research activity requirements. The post will also entail the daily administration of the Labs.

The appointment is for a definite contract of four years.

 

Eligibility

The post of Systems Engineer is open to graduates with a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in ICT, a B.Eng. (Hons.) degree, or equivalent; preferably in computer engineering or computing science.

In addition, applicants would preferably also have relevant practical experience in a production environment, related to network and computer systems administration. Experience with Linux / UNIX systems, and particularly with management of HPC infrastructure and job scheduling systems, is preferred.

Applicants not in possession of an Engineering Warrant will be appointed as a Graduate Engineer, once the warrant to practice as an Engineer is obtained, will be automatically upgraded to a ‘Systems Engineer’.

 

Knowledge and Skills  

  • Experience of working in a laboratory environment with a variety of advanced equipment and specifically in the operation of computing, networking, and communications equipment.
  • Competence in maintaining and administering software and computer systems;
  • Competence in design, development and commissioning of new engineering systems;
  • Ability to maintain equipment including hardware and software aspects; necessarily this requires planning preventative actions, maintaining good relations with suppliers, and coordinating downtime in line with departmental requirements.
  • Readiness to get involved and assist research projects of a diverse nature.
  • Possesses good interpersonal skills, a positive attitude and capable of maintaining a clear focus in a rapidly changing technological environment;
  • Demonstrate leadership and managerial skills and be results-oriented;
  • In possession of effective oral and written communication skills
  • Able to communicate in the Maltese and English languages
  • Effective time-management skills;
  • Keen interest in implementation of standard practices, health and safety, and waste management in line with the long-term departmental strategy.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to think strategically, identify issues and formulate recommendations.
  • The aptitude to take initiative, work independently and in a team environment.
  • The capacity to assist in the day-to-day management of CCE technical personnel, facilities and infrastructure of the laboratories as directed by the Head of Department and the appointed Coordinator.
  • The readiness to be trained overseas if required.

 

Salary

The annual salary for 2025 attached to the post is:

Graduate Engineer: €29,209 rising by annual increments of €500 up to a maximum of €32,709.

Systems Engineer: €31,179 rising by annual increments of €535 up to a maximum of €34,924. On completion of four years’ service in the grade, the appointee will, on satisfactory performance, be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €600 up to a maximum of €37,484.

Further Information

The Systems Engineer is responsible to the Head, Department of Communications and Computer Engineering for acquiring, commissioning, coordinating, operating and maintaining existing and new software, equipment and systems in the Department, and as may be required by the University.

The Systems Engineer will be responsible for coordinating and executing technical and administrative tasks in the Department’s laboratories, to assist academic staff in their teaching and research activities within the laboratories, and to carry out any other duties as may be required. The appointee is required to take a leading role in supporting the technical needs of the Department’s expanding laboratory activities which now include tasks at undergraduate level, postgraduate research level, postdoctoral research level, as well as researchers visiting from overseas.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the needs of all the Department’s laboratories.
  • Perform laboratory administrative work and take action to control costs, optimize resources and enhance the quality and efficiency of laboratory operations,
  • Service and support academic staff for ordering and purchasing of equipment and components used in the laboratories,
  • Assist academic staff in budgeting of equipment for research proposals,
  • Participate in the compilation of the Department’s business plans for laboratories and technical equipment,
  • Take the necessary action to ensure regular maintenance of equipment in the department,
  • Keep up-to-date records of stock and equipment in the department,
  • Keep up-to-date the software installed on the various equipment,
  • Set up and maintain the Department’s HPC infrastructure and the related job scheduler,
  • Set up and enforce plans and procedures for ensuring high standards of safety in the laboratories.
  • Liaise with various support units within UM, including the Procurement, Estates, Facilities and Capital Development and Research Support Services Directorate.
  • Support good Environmental, Health and Safety practices and initiatives within CCE laboratories.
  • Introduce formal management and quality systems, including operational and maintenance procedures.
  • Follow courses offered by the University that are related to duties, including the possibility of training periods abroad.

 

The appointee is expected to work:

  • On a full-time basis, and will not be allowed to engage in any other gainful employment without the permission of the Council; and
  • At such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of one year, and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
