Applicants with professional doctorates are not eligible. Postdoctoral experience as well as research, lecturing and supervision of postgraduate students and experience in securing funding will be considered an asset. The successful applicant will be required to present the original certificate upon request by the Office for Human Resources Management & Development, and in the event that their Ph.D. or D.Phil. certification is from a University outside Malta, they are also expected to present a confirmation of recognition by the Malta Qualifications Recognition Information Centre (MQRIC) – see https://mfhea.mt/academic-qualifications/.

The appointee will also be required to contribute to the administration, and other activities of the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Biobanking and as may be required by the University.

The Resident Academic Stream is composed of four grades, being Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer and Lecturer. Entry into the grade of Lecturer or above shall only be open to persons in possession of a Ph.D. or a D.Phil. within strict guidelines established by the University of Malta.

The University of Malta will provide academic staff with financial resources through the Academic Resources Fund to support continuous professional development and to provide the tools and resources required by an academic to adequately fulfil the teaching and academic research commitments within the University.

Appointments to Assistant Lecturer Grade

The University may also appoint promising candidates as Assistant Lecturers who do not yet possess a Ph.D.  provided that applicants

  • Are already at an advanced stage of their studies for the Ph.D./ D.Phil. and preferably would have already successfully transferred their registration from M.Phil. to Ph.D./ D.Phil; and

  • Are able to complete their Ph.D. studies in a period of four (4) years, to be reckoned from the commencement date of their employment;

after which, they will become eligible for appointment to the grade of Lecturer.

Successful completion of a period of service of four (4) years and of the Tenure Track and Review process, the position will be converted into one of indefinite term.

In the event that an Assistant Lecturer employed pursuant to this Call does not complete their Ph.D./D.Phil  studies within the initial four (4)-year period of employment, the University of Malta may, at its discretion, and depending on the progress made in the relative Ph.D./D.Phil studies, offer a one (1)-time extension of the Assistant Lecturer’s employment period of a further definite term of up to two (2) years, within which the Assistant Lecturer shall be required to complete their Ph.D./D.Phil. studies and successfully complete their Tenure Track and Tenure Review process. For the avoidance of doubt, the definite term extension in such cases is based on the objective justification that the Ph.D./D.Phil. qualification is essential to obtain tenure as Lecturer, as set out in the applicable Collective Agreement.

The annual salary for 2026 attached to the grade of Assistant Lecturer is as follows:

Assistant Lecturer with Masters; €38,297 with an annual increment of €596 to €40,085 and an Academic Supplement of €5,353.

The Centre for Molecular Medicine and Biobanking

The Centre’s main scope is to try to understand the role of particular molecules that form part of the intricate pathways within the body that give rise, for example, to the formation of new cells and in turn the death of cells at the appropriate time.   Errors in gene transcription or translation for example can give rise to congenital disorders, some forms of cancer and neurodevelopmental anomalies. These molecules in turn are synthesised by our cells in which the blue-print is held in our DNA. The Human Genome encodes around 17,000 genes and the code per se is written in 3 billion letters. Sequencing the genome, and, more to the point the Maltese Genome, has been accomplished by University researchers that form a core part of the Centre.   In the meantime, the Centre has established a Biobank, DWARNABIO, that has provided the essential samples under high quality standards through its membership in the BioBanking and BioMolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI) of the European Commission in which the University represents the Government of Malta. Consequently, it is now possible to study the role of particular genes and their resultant molecules in both health and disease for the discovery of new personalised medicines. In order to do so, Bioinformatics provides the tools to find the appropriate sites through which one may be able to pursue the development of medications that specifically target molecular sites that give rise to the causes of concern. The Centre has been awarded and ERA Chair in Bioinformatics to cover the period 2023-2028 in which a team of talented individuals in field has been put together to further accelerate the development of pipelines to seek novel treatments.

It is also anticipated that some of the fruits of the Centre may also be translated into new business developments that in the first instance may be incubated here at the University before becoming fully fledged in the Life Science Park next door. Such new technology companies will benefit us all, both from a health and an economic perspective permitting new tools for investment.
