Peter Magro

A Maltese Educator, Artist, and Independent Comic Creator

Peter Magro, teaches art professionally at the post-secondary and tertiary level. He is also carving a place in Malta’s growing comic book scene. His passion for comics and visual storytelling started at an early age and is now a prominent aspect in his life, supported by a background in Fine Arts and Digital Arts.

His publishing journey began in 2015 with his first graphic novel, STEAM: Island Under Siege (written by Ashley Eric Peschel), for which he provided the illustrations. Since then, he has collaborated on several productions and short comics—many of which were educational or targeted toward young readers.

But Magro’s defining project is his solo indie comic series Energy Quest, a creation in which he both writes and illustrates under the self-publishing label Piston Chronicles. With three issues already completed, the fourth set is for launch at the Malta Comic Con this November. Energy Quest, a post-apocalyptic story about a teddy bear scavenging for batteries.

Energy Quest: A post-apocalyptic teddy bear

The series follows Zero, an AI robot teddy bear wandering through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Like humans, Zero must survive by finding energy, which in his case takes the form of batteries. But his journey is shadowed by a looming danger: the Hive, a collective AI determined to assimilate him into its collective mind. The comic engages with broader themes such as hubris, the duality of artificial intelligence, and the archetype of the lone wanderer, echoing the spirit of classic Westerns within a sci-fi framework.

Each issue of Energy Quest runs approximately 50–70 pages long, and is produced through a blend of traditional and digital techniques, and is released annually at the Malta Comic Con. This year, the 4th issue will be released during this year’s Malta Comic Con.
