Opening Hours

The Acquisitions Department’s mission is to allocate financial resources in an efficient and cost effective way by negotiating with publishers and aggregators, working closely with academics, and collaborating with colleagues to provide print and online resources which support the University’s teaching and research programmes.

The department is responsible for:

  • drafting the annual financial estimates and departmental allocations
  • liaising with the Procurement Directorate for the ordering of new works
  • processing of the recently acquired publications
  • controlling the Library’s budget
  • collaborating with the Finance Department

In conjunction with the Reference Department, the Acquisitions Department subscribes to Ulrichsweb Global Serials Directory, and maintains a wide range of publishers’ catalogues for perusal by interested parties within the Reference Reading Room.

Academic staff is encouraged to recommend publications by filling out an online form. Ordered items can be traced on the Library’s Web OPAC and identified through their On Order item status until they are tagged as Cataloguing on arrival. Each new work is registered on the inventory, labelled and stamped to designate the item as Library property. The inventory or barcode number is a unique number that identifies any particular item and can be used to trace books on the Web OPAC. Books are also equipped with security tags before being passed on to the Cataloguing Department.
