Our awards

Our Department established the Professor Geoffrey Chamberlain Prize in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 1992 through the kind bequest of Professor Chamberlain (1930 - 2014) who served as Professor Emeritus in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George's Hospital Medical School in London, and past President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

According to the terms of the bequest, the prize is awarded to the student who obtains an 80% overall mark or more in the speciality of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the final year of M.D. studies. The Prize has been awarded to:

  • 1992/93:  Konrad Zammit 
  • 1995/96:  Simone Bajada
  • 1998/99: Edward Despott & Lorraine Muscat
  • 2004/05: Thomas Lofaro 
  • 2007/08: Louise Reichmuth


In 2009, the prize was augmented by the Bayer A.G. Prize in Obstetrics & Gynaecology through the support of Bayer-Pharma AG. This is an international healthcare company, that is committed to sustainable development in various fields of healthcare including Gynaecology. The prize includes a monetary prize for the medical student who shows the greatest understanding of clinical obstetrics and gynaecology reflected by the grades obtained during the overall assessment in the speciality of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The Prize is awarded to the student who is first in order of merit in the overall written, portfolio, and clinical assessments in the speciality. The Prize has been awarded to:

In 2022, the Department further instituted the Gedeon Ritcher Ltd. Prize in Women’s Health through the support of the European innovation-driven specialty pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter Ltd. The prize includes a monetary prize for the medical student whose second year women’s health-related essay submission  is deemed to be the most meritorious by a board of assessors representing the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, of Anatomy, and of Physiology & Biochemistry.  The Prize has been awarded to:

  • 2021/22: Andrea Caruana for the essay project entitled  ‘Hypotheses on the Temporal Difference in Activation of COX Isozymes and Non-Uniform Neoangiogenesis in Endometriosis: A Literature Review’. 
  • 2022/23: Karl Livori for the essay project entitled: 'Endometriosis-associated Ovarian Cancer'.
  • 2023/24: Ruby Sciriha Camilleri for trhe essay project entitled: Strategic Expansion in Women’s Healthcare: Focus on Unmet Needs in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome’ .
