The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology has undertaken the effort to publish a number of student aids, clinical guidelines, and other relevant works related to the speciality.

It includes a glossary of Maltese terms related to the speciality of obstetrics and gynaecology compiled by Ms Elizabeth Cassar. This publication documents the aetiological evidence related to GDM and T2DM in the Maltese population and how this related to the concept of endogenous teratogenesis. The first chapter reviews the developments that have occurred over the centuries relating to outlooks towards malformations and teratogenesis leading to the realisation that endogenous foetal teratogenesis is an important contributor to adult-onset disease. The second chapter reviews the epidemiology of the Maltese population as this relates to metabolic disease; the third chapter reviews the history of diabetes mellitus in the Maltese Islands, while the fourth chapter details the evidence for a genetic and for an intrauterine environment aetiology for the eventual development of metabolic disease concentrating of GDM, T2DM and childhood obesity.
