UM Academics Honoured with the Sustainable Development Research and Innovation Awards

On Friday, 10 October, the Sustainable Development Directorate within the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness presented the inaugural Sustainable Development Action Awards, recognising outstanding contributions to sustainability across Malta.

The awards were organised with the support of the Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government, the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth, Research and Innovation, and the Environment and Resources Authority.

Three academics from the University of Malta were recognised in the Research and Innovation Award category.

Prof. Ruben Paul Borg (Department of Construction and Property Management, Faculty for the Built Environment), 1st Place: 3D Printing of Low-Carbon Concrete for Sustainable Construction; reducing embodied carbon while enabling circular, resilient construction through additive manufacturing. The 3D Concrete Project was funded by Xjenza Malta through the Research Excellence Programme.

Prof. Joseph Borg (Department of Applied Biomedical Science, Faculty of Health Sciences), 2nd Place: Space Biology Solutions for Global Health; leveraging ISS/spaceflight research to advance diagnostics and therapies for patients on Earth.

Dr Thérèse Bajada (Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development), 3rd Place: Bilingual Book on Sustainable Mobility for Children Attending Year 6; early-age literacy and behaviour change for greener communities through sustainable mobility.

These awards highlight the University of Malta’s continued commitment to advancing research and innovation that contribute to a more sustainable future.
