Mentoring & Career Development

The Office for Professional Academic Development (OPAD) is committed to supporting the career development of all UM academics, whatever their discipline or career stage. Every academic should have the opportunity, guidance, and resources to achieve their professional goals and succeed in their role.

Tenure Track Support

We recognise the unique challenges faced by early-career academics on the tenure track and offer targeted support to help them navigate expectations, build a strong tenure application, and plan for long-term growth.

As part of this support, OPAD offers a briefing seminar - Preparing for Tenure - to guide academics through the tenure process, clarify expectations, and provide practical strategies for building a strong tenure application.

Academic Mentoring Programme

New and early-career academics are invited to join the Academic Mentoring Programme (AMP). This initiative is designed to help them navigate the various roles and responsibilities expected, particularly as they progress through the tenure track process.

The AMP pairs early-career academics (mentees) with senior, experienced colleagues (mentors) who provide advice, share knowledge and offer ongoing support over several months. The programme consists of structured meetings, goal-setting, progress evaluations, and feedback mechanisms to ensure meaningful development. Mentees receive tailored guidance to succeed in teaching, research, administrative duties, community outreach, funding initiatives, and other academic responsibilities.

Leadership Mentoring Programme

Stepping into a leadership role can be challenging. Launched this October 2025, the Leadership Mentoring Programme for Heads of Department will support academic leadership development, effective departmental management, and confidence-building. The programme connects new and early career HoDs with seasoned leaders who can provide guidance, insight, and support in navigating complex academic leadership responsibilities.
