Supervising doctoral students’ writing is a central academic responsibility that requires careful judgement, effective communication, and sustained engagement. Academics may encounter challenges in providing constructive feedback on dissertation chapters, supporting students experiencing writing difficulties, and balancing supervisory responsibilities with their own research and writing commitments. Effective supervision plays an important role in helping doctoral students develop as confident, independent scholarly writers.
This webinar supports academics in strengthening their supervisory practices related to doctoral writing. Participants will explore approaches to providing feedback that is clear, constructive, and supports students’ progress, as well as strategies for working with students who may be experiencing writing challenges. The session will also address ways in which academics can model productive and sustainable academic writing practices through their interactions with students.
Participants will further consider principles for establishing effective co-authoring relationships with doctoral students, including setting clear expectations and supporting students’ professional development as emerging scholars. The workshop will provide practical frameworks, tools, and strategies to help academics foster a supportive writing environment and enhance their effectiveness in supervising doctoral writers.
By the end of this webinar, the participants will be able to:
