Overview

This workshop focuses on the various legal aspects and considerations that Deans and Heads of Department will face on a day-to-day basis in the performance of their functions. It aims to build confidence in managing the day-to-day decisions and interactions that carry legal implications. Participants will gain insights into the services of the University Legal Office, the University’s legal status, and the role of the Ombudsman. The workshop will also address the Judicial Review of Administrative Act, explaining through the analysis of relevant case studies, how and when courts may review administrative decisions made by the University. Furthermore, the workshop will highlight practical tips and best practices for decision-making, managing interactions with students and employees (including disciplinary procedures), and handling communications with external authorities (such as the Police and Ombudsman).

Learning outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • describe the services of the Legal Office and the role of the Ombudsman as key resources for academic leaders.
  • explain the implications of the University's legal status and the concept of Judicial Review of Administrative Act on departmental decision-making.
  • apply practical strategies and best practices for decision-making, managing interactions with students and employees (including disciplinary procedures), and communicating with external authorities.
  • analyse case studies to identify key principles of procedural fairness and mitigate legal risk in administrative scenarios.
