Research Areas

The Department of Dance Studies develops research within the framework of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Malta. Our research faculty is made of a team of resident academic dance scholars and postgraduate students who bring together expertise and interest in embodied methodologies, practice-as-research, and interdisciplinary approaches to theoretical research in dance.

We strive for generating, participate, and support collective efforts in dance research through international collaborations, Erasmus Projects, and by way of having regularly guest dance scholars as part of our annual teaching programme.

As an EU University and part of the SEA-EU alliance, our faculty and community of dance students benefit from Erasmus teaching and study mobilities, participation in overseas learning experiences, as well as collaboration in international funding bids.

Since its creation, the department has progressively become a hub for research on dance and performance, providing opportunities for staff, students, and guests to further their knowledge in the field.

Aiming to stay current in its research focus, the department centres around contemporary concerns and areas of study within the theory, practice, and history of dance. The departments specialisations include:

  • Dance Education
  • Dance Improvisation
  • Community Dance
  • Arts and Disability
  • Philosophy of Dance
  • Somatic Practices
  • Dance Analysis
  • Dance Anthropology/Ethnology
  • Critical Dance Studies
  • Dance Training
  • Screendance
  • Dance and Technology
