Audition guidelines for Diploma in Wind Band Studies

Prospective students applying for the above course are required to take part in an audition and/or interview as a form of assessment for their eligibility to the programme. However, applicants with a pass at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level in Music are exempted from both interview and audition. In the case of applicants without the above-mentioned qualifications, admittance to the courses is subject to a successful audition and/or interview.

After submitting their application, applicants will be called for an interview and/or audition. For this, applicants should either:

(i) perform a short programme of two or three contrasting pieces with a total duration of 6 to 8 minutes.

OR

(ii) in the case of applicants whose main training is in music composition, show and discuss a sample of their compositional work/s.

Applicants needing piano accompaniment must bring their own accompanist.

 

Additionally, for the audition and interview, applicants must bring with them:

a. an original copy of the highest certificate/diploma obtained in music theory and in practice
b. ID card or passport.

Criteria for the audition and interview include technical ability (control, flow, quality of earlier training, ability to talk technically about music); the student’s potential for development (quality of observation, commitment, expression, musicality); social interaction (the student’s openness to new ideas and ability to work with others); articulation (ability to explain their interests in music studies and express their opinions); creativity (the ability to respond to tasks, improvise, take risks and problem solve); and critical thinking skills in written English.

  • 14 February 2023, Music Room 124, Department of Music Studies, School of Performing Arts, University of Malta, Msida Campus.  Applicants will be given a time-slot for their audition by the Secretary of the Department of Music Studies for the above date.

Applicants whose main training is in music composition shall submit a sample copy of their composition/s by date to be confirmed either by email or by hand to the departmental secretary (Ms Margherita Borg Buhagiar) during contact hours (08:00-12:00)

 

Important Information for international applicants

Since English is the language of tuition and communication, all international applicants are required to submit a Secure English Language Test (TOEFL/IELTS/Cambridge Advanced) to the required standard by 31 August on the year of entry. Further information is available online. Please note that applicants who fail to submit this certificate by the stipulated deadline cannot be admitted to the course even if all other entry requirements are satisfied.
