The citizen and the EU - Knowing your rights under EU law (EUCIT)

EUCIT is a Jean Monnet Chair project financed by the EU under the Erasmus+ programme. The Chair holder is Prof. Ivan Sammut. The project is being run by the Department of European & Comparative Law and aims to make university students, the legal profession, the public in Malta, and the wider world more knowledgeable about their rights under EU law as EU citizens and bring the EU closer to its citizens.

The Project initially intends to target the University of Malta (UM) general student population, focusing on a mixture of law and political science students, to learn more about their rights under EU law. The objectives are reached through the teaching of compulsory and elective study-units, as well as new study-units in the programmes of LL.B (Hons), M. Adv. (the degrees required to become a practising lawyer), BA European Studies, LL.M and through the Degree Plus programme to target the UM general student population from all fields, including humanities, sciences, medicine, etc. Most of these lectures are open to the general public and some of them have been recorded and made available to the public on YouTube.

More is needed to train lawyers and members of the general public regarding their rights under EU law. The rationale behind this project is to address these issues and improve knowledge about EU rights. Public national and European dissemination is also enhanced through mass and social media. Some topics will be presented via national printed and electronic media and online channels to ensure wider dissemination.

The outreach activities target the general community, including professional chambers and overseas students. More than 1000 persons benefit directly through the project, not counting the participants of the project events and online audiences.
