Welcome to the Bioinformatics Group

Bioinformatics is a multidisciplinary field blending the fields of computer science, biology, mathematics and statistics together.  Due to the large amounts of data that is being produced in the molecular biology field, bioinformatics has become imperative in such research.

The Bioinformatics group at the University of Malta was brought to life from an active collaboration between the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry and the Department of Mathematics and is planning to expand its collaborations with other departments/faculties within the University of Malta.

The research presently being conducted and to be undertaken in the near future involves the following bioinformatics tasks:

  • Linkage Analysis
  • Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS)/Genetic Association Studies
  • Expression Profiling
  • Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Data Management, Analysis and Visualisation
  • Systems Biology/Virtual Physiology
  • Protein Structure Modelling and Visualisation

The Group uses the University's supercomputer to perform these analyses, using data provided by members of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.
