The COVID-19 and education in Malta (Cov-EM) study

The Cov-EM study

The Cov-EM study explores the impact of COVID-19 on six stakeholders in Maltese Education:

  • University Students in Initial Teacher Education
  • Primary Educators
  • Early Childhood Educators
  • Leaders in Early and Primary Education
  • Parents in Early and Primary Education
  • Children in Early and Primary Education

Study Overview

COVID-19 disrupted many institutions, including schools resulting in billions of children staying out of school and confined to their homes. Ensuring continuity of learning became a priority for many governments worldwide where they required teachers to shift from face-to-face to online learning quickly. Teachers, parents and students coped in different ways. The uncertainty that this period brought about also presented challenges and opportunities for innovations in how teaching and learning take place. It further discovered new learning spaces and influenced the well-being of stakeholders within education systems. This situation urged the need to conduct research involving education stakeholders to inform future action. The quicker we learn how to cope with learning within the ‘new normality’, the more we can help young learners manage and progress successfully.

Project Objectives

To understand the successes and challenges of teaching and learning (in early and primary education) as experienced by different stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic over time.
Pillar 1: Teaching and Learning

To gauge the extent to which the 'new' learning spaces were available, accessible and affordable for children (in early and primary education) during the pandemic over time.
Pillar 2: Learning Spaces

To gain an insight into the status of well-being and the dynamics of relationships among the different stakeholders (in early and primary education) during the pandemic over time.
Pillar 3: Well-being and relationships

Research Question

What lessons can we learn from the perspectives of different stakeholders in education during the COVID-19 pandemic in Malta?
