The Medicines Use Research Group (MURG) is an interdisciplinary research team within the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, at the University of Malta, Msida. It was established in 2016 by Professor Maria Cordina to encourage and support individuals engaged in high-quality research focused on the appropriate, safe, and effective use of medicines.

MURG aims to produce practice-relevant, evidence-based research that improves how medicines are used. The group’s research strives to influence patient care, healthcare policy, education, and public health at both national and international levels. The Medicines Use Research Group prides itself in prioritising research integrity. It strives to foster a supportive research group culture which includes encouraging honest, non-judgmental discussions about challenges, implementing structured mentorship, valuing diversity, and focusing on collaborative, process-oriented goals rather than just outcomes.

The group’s research spans multiple domains including:

  • Medication safety
  • Organisational Culture in relation to Medication Safety
  • Patient medication- related beliefs, expectations, adherence and behaviours
  • Health and medication literacy
  • Medication use in vulnerable populations
  • Healthcare system processes
  • Digital health education
  • Optimising medication systems and reducing waste
  • Overall appropriate use of medicines

Research is typically applied, context-specific, and grounded in real-world practice.
