Drug testing in the workplace where to start

This resource is designed to assist you in understanding and implementing drug testing procedures in your organisation.

Types of Workplace Drug Tests

There are several types of workplace drug testing.  These include:

  • A pre-employment drug test is conducted during the recruitment process.  
  • Random drug testing is where an employer may randomly test their employees.
  • Post-incident drug testing is where a drug test is performed after a workplace incident.
  • On Suspicion Drug Test is conducted when an employee appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Testing Methods

There are several types of testing methods that include:

  • Urine Tests: Common and cost-effective. Can detect for up to 3-5 days after drugs have been used.
  • Hair Tests: Can detect drug over a longer period (up to 3 months or longer).  
  • Saliva Tests: Less invasive and can detect recent drug use.  Only detects drug use for up to 12-24 hours after use.
  • Blood Tests: Highly accurate but more invasive and expensive.  Shorter detection time then urine.
