The fellow gave a lecture during the this online course, organised by the European Institute for Emerging Technologies in collaboration with the EIT Community Hub and funded by eSkills Malta Foundation.

Xagħra, Gozo Primary School – 21/02/2024
Dr. Maria Cardona, alongside her primary supervisor Professor Ruben Gatt, actively contributed to the Tiny Teen Science Café event organized by the Gozo Science Team. The event featured a series of workshops designed to foster interest in science careers among primary school students. During their session, Prof. Ruben Gatt and Dr. Maria Cardona conducted a workshop focused on engaging children with various activities aimed at igniting curiosity and enthusiasm for the study of chemical sciences. Students from Xagħra and Rabat Primary Schools attended the event. The event was advertised on the facebook page of the Rabat primary school.



Junior College Careers Expo 2024 – 5-9th February 2024
Dr. Maria Cardona, along with fellow researchers from the Metamaterials Unit and the Department of Chemistry, actively engaged in the Junior College Careers Expo. Their collective objective was to advocate for the field of Chemistry within the University community by showcasing practical project exemplars such as AMPLIFI. St. Aloysius Sixth Form Visit – 18/12/2023
The researcher served as the primary contact person tasked with coordinating a visit for students from St. Aloysius. Her responsibilities included mobilizing fellow researchers interested in conducting tours of various laboratories within the Department of Chemistry, as well as liaising with tutors to facilitate the organization of the event.
Unconventional Science Careers (USC) 2023 - Science - #STEAM@UM – 30/11/2023 – 01/11/2023
Once again, the researcher participated in the outreach event organized by the Communications and Marketing Office at the University of Malta (UM), aimed at engaging 11-12 year olds who are in the process of deciding which subjects to study for their Ordinary levels. Serving as the designated contact person for both the Department of Chemistry and Metamaterials, she spearheaded the presentation of a stand highlighting ongoing research in auxetics and coordinated stands presented by other researchers. The event was publicised on the Facebook page of the Faculty of Science.
12/07/2023 MSCA PF2MT Masterclass, Planetarium Hall, Esplora Kalkara
On the 12th July 2023, MCST organised a workshop for candidates who intend to submit a Marie-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship application with the University of Malta as a host. The MSCA fellow was invited to give her input on her experience of writing the application, giving some tips to prospective candidates. It was also an opportunity for the prospective candidates to discuss ideas with the fellow through a networking session which followed.

10/07/2023 Alumni talk
The Fellow was invited to give an alumni talk about the graduate experience for prospective students of the Faculty of Science. The event was organised by the Science Students Society, S3.
A group of science students from St. Aloysius visited the Chemistry and Metamaterials laboratories. Dr Maria Cardona coordinated the team and presented her research on AMPLIFI.

Secondary students visited the Faculty of Science to find out what it means to be a scientist. The MSCA fellow, Dr Maria Cardona coordinated the team from the Chemistry and Metamaterials Unit and took part by preparing a presentation and a series of posters on Chemistry-related career opportunities.


Dr Maria Cardona organised a stand related to auxetics and presenting the basic concepts of AMPLIFI during Freshers’ week, thus exposing the research to present University students.

The project was promoted on a The Sunday Times of Malta of the 20th March 2022 where the Sounds of Science page was written by the research fellow Dr Maria Cardona. The main article was about the project, entitled “Stretching the boundaries of materials design”
The research fellow, Dr Maria Cardona participated on a radio programme where she was involved in a discussion on ethical issues brought about by scientific advances and how to approach them.
The Marie Curie Fellow, Dr Maria Cardona and AMPLIFI were featured on MSCA-Net as an inspirational story.
