Il-Perla Kindergarten Overview
Il-Perla Kindergarten is tailored for children aged 3 to 5 years. With two classrooms, Denfil and Arzella, our setup encourages play, exploration, and hands-on learning through a variety of resources and activities. We use the National Learning Outcomes Framework as a guideline while embracing the emergent curriculum, carefully observing each child’s interests, progress, and needs to create dynamic, adaptable learning experiences that foster holistic development.
Our kindergarten is also deeply committed to community engagement and environmental responsibility. Children participate in initiatives such as Eco-Schools and Let’s Talk Farming, promoting awareness of sustainability and helping them develop a sense of responsibility towards the world around them. Through these projects, we also partner with families and higher education institutions to create a strong community network and instil shared values.
At Il-Perla Kindergarten, our learning approach is child-centered, emergent, and project-based, designed to nurture curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning. While our educators plan activities guided by the National Learning Outcomes Framework, our emphasis is on following the emergent curriculum. This means we carefully observe each child’s interests, progress, and developmental needs, allowing us to adapt activities dynamically and respond to what children are genuinely curious about.
We use project-based teaching to connect learning to real-life themes that are meaningful to children. For example, a project about growing vegetables can integrate:
This approach allows children to learn academic concepts through practical, hands-on experiences, making the knowledge relevant and applicable rather than abstract. By exploring concepts in context, children develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, while also building confidence and independence.
Daily experiences include:
Our approach ensures that children not only acquire academic skills, but also understand how to apply them in real-world situations, bridging early childhood learning with later primary education.
Children’s progress and assessments are recorded online regularly, with parents having direct access to written observations. Twice a year, individual parent meetings are held where educators review each child’s development, discuss the child’s journal, and plan next steps collaboratively with parents.
At Il-Perla Kindergarten, we can accommodate a maximum of 14/16 children according to their ages. Some of these spots may be allocated to children with nappies, particularly those transferring from our Centres. For new applicants who haven't utilized our services previously, it's essential that the child is toilet trained before the commencement of the scholastic year.
Parents or guardians interested in enrolling their children need to complete the official registration form, which is conveniently accessible online. This registration form remains open throughout the year, allowing parents or guardians to submit it at any time.
Once the form, along with the €40 one-time registration fee, is submitted, the child is officially placed on the school's waiting list. Admission to the Kindergarten is contingent upon the waiting list and available vacancies within the specific age group. The waiting list is managed based on the date of registration and order of priority.
Order of Priority:
Parents are contacted at the end of May for the September intake.
It's important to note that there is one intake, occurring during the last week of September, for children applying directly to the Kindergarten. Additionally, there is a second intake at the beginning of February, but this option is exclusively available for children transferring from Ilwien or It-Tajra Childcare Centre.
We appreciate your understanding of our enrolment process and look forward to welcoming your child to Il-Perla Kindergarten.
At Il-Perla Kindergarten, we actively collaborate with families and the wider community to support each child’s holistic development. Our team works closely with professionals such as speech and language therapists and occupational therapists to ensure that children receive the guidance and support they need within their daily learning environment. We also engage with different faculties from the University of Malta, strengthening links between early childhood education and higher education through shared knowledge, research-informed practices, and community-based initiatives.
These collaborations enrich our programme, allowing us to create meaningful learning experiences while fostering a supportive network around the child and family.
At Il-Perla Kindergarten, we place strong emphasis on supporting children through key transition stages. Moving from home or a childcare setting into kindergarten is a significant milestone, and we work closely with families to ensure this process is gradual, reassuring, and responsive to each child’s emotional and developmental needs. Through familiarisation visits, open communication with parents, and consistent routines, children are given the time and support needed to build confidence and a sense of belonging.
Equally important is the transition from kindergarten to primary school. Our learning experiences are designed to foster independence, social competence, early literacy and numeracy understanding, and positive learning dispositions, ensuring children are well prepared for the expectations of their next educational environment. We actively seek dialogue with receiving schools to promote continuity in values, learning approaches, and the overall well-being of the child.
In addition, Il-Perla Kindergarten supports the community linked to the University of Malta by welcoming children of temporary academic or research staff who may be in Malta for a limited period. Where vacancies allow, we offer flexible enrolment for students attending for part of the scholastic year, ensuring these families also benefit from a stable, nurturing educational environment during their stay.
This flexible and responsive approach reflects our commitment to inclusivity, continuity of care, and strong partnerships with families and institutions.
