Centre for the Third Age Education

(co-funded by the Tempus Programme of the European Union)

The Department of Gerontology & Dementia Studies was represented by Prof. Marvin Formosa.

The project’s goal was to develop human capital resources through the promotion of lifelong learning and social inclusion of older people in Azerbaijan, Russia and Ukraine.

Objectives included:

  • to carry out awareness raising campaign on issues related to the Third Age Education in Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Russia
  • to establish Third Age Education Centres by January 2015 in each partner country, and
  • to promote equality of schooling and advance intergenerational exchange between older and younger people in each partner country.

The principal outcomes and outputs of the project included:

  • enhancement of knowledge about issues related to Third Age Education among academic community in the 3 partner countries
  • elaborating the concept and model of Third Age Education
  • producing research papers and practical measures in the field of Third Age Education in partner countries
  • creating Third Age Education centres in each partner country
  • facilitate the autonomous running of the created Third Age Education Centres, and
  • increasing public awareness of issues related to Third Age Education among the community in the partner countries.

Taken together, these outcomes resulted in an increased number of older people participating in third age education in Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Russia.
