Our histroy

The Department of Psychology at the University of Malta was officially set up in October 1988.

The Department, which was first set up within the Faculty of Arts, offered a three-year B.A. (General) degree with Psychology as a main area followed by a four-year Honours degree in Psychology. In 1992, our Department moved from the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Education and we introduced the B.Psy. (Hons) apart from the B.A. (General) in Psychology. The Programme for Inclusive Education, which was part of the Department, offered the Diploma in Inclusive Education on a regular basis.

In 2003, a Masters degree in Psychology (M.Psy.), with three different streams, namely Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology and Educational Psychology, was offered. At the Gozo Campus, in 2009, the part-time B.A. degree course was held once, and in 2011 the one-year full-time Higher Diploma in Psychology was offered.

Our Department was instrumental in introducing Psychology at Intermediate level (for post-secondary education) in Malta in 2012.

We became to form part of the newly established Faculty for Social Wellbeing in 2012.
