Reduce and reuse

Reduce and reuse

We are dedicated to waste separation and collection and for this to be available throughout the University of Malta Msida Campus, auxiliary campuses and the Junior College.

A waste separation pilot project commenced in March 2020 covering the building at Gateway, the Administration block, University House and the Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy (FEMA) building.

The Quadrangle and Gateway outdoor areas were also part of this pilot project. In September 2025 new waste-separation bins for open spaces at UM were installed across Campus.

A number University buildings have been provided with waste-separation bins and work is underway to equip the remaining buildings with the appropriate bins for internal use.

Read the article by Prof. Renald Blundell on the importance of sustainability and our duty to separate waste.

Refer to the map to see the location of some outdoor bins and the skips found at the UM Msida Campus.

Promoting reuse of goods

In light of the objectives for the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) 2025, the University of Malta participated in this week of events, through three main activities, promoting reuse of goods. The focus of the EWWR events held at the UM Msida Campus was on the reuse of clothes and books.

Read about the three events organised:

  1. Trash to Trend – 2026 Ethical Fashion Campaign
  2. a Thrift Shop on Campus
  3. a Second-Hand Book Sale.

We believe in reducing single-use plastic.

C-SUM held meetings with food operators on campus to lower and eliminate single-use plastics in catering. A number of food operators have been actively promoting reusable bamboo cutlery and cups.

C-SUM also held meetings with UM’s event organisers to eliminate single-use plastic for UM events.
