Studying with us

Arabic, Chinese, and Hebrew—these eastern languages are the soul of the Department of Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures.

Whether you call them passports, bridges, or sails, these languages start you on a journey of discovery. The tactile experience of twisting new sounds around and working your hand to write in new ways stays with you forever, even if you don’t become fluent! It’s easy to question what a person can do if they have studied a language but not business, science, or IT.

Yet learning these languages requires constant negotiation. There are always power dynamics and cultural transactions at play. And their grammatical formulas aren’t that different from scientific or mathematical equations. Both are founded on guiding principles, then intuition takes you to deeper levels of understanding.

Start your own journey east and see what Arabic, Chinese, or Hebrew will teach you about yourself and the world!
