DESCRIPTION Objective:

This study-unit looks at the coastal and ocean resources and how their use can be managed.

Content:

Following an initial introduction on ecological and oceanographic processes that influence the coastal ecosystems the study-unit looks at some of the major uses exploiting these resources. The aim is to identify the demands of coastal uses and their impact on the natural resources as well as on other coastal uses. The issue of management is then tackled through a review of related international environmental law. Tools which facilitate coastal management are also introduced, these include plan and policymaking, GIS and public participation techniques.
