This programme of study offers postgraduate students an opportunity to undertake an independent research project. The taught component (10 ECTS) at the beginning of the course will help students acquire the necessary tools to undertake and complete such a project through a discussion of the academic, ethical, political and practical implications of undertaking research in Performing Arts. Much of the research will be considered as independent study, but each student will be assigned one or more academics who will tutor the research process, from selecting an area to writing a research proposal, and researching and writing a dissertation. The specific research will depend on the students' interests as well as staff specialization and strategic research areas earmarked by the department.
The course is intended to give students an opportunity to develop into mature researchers in a specific area of the Performing Arts. They will be assisted in creating research questions, pursuing and documenting them through an extensive piece of academic writing, and in specific cases, illuminated through artistic practice.

Specialist areas for inclusion include:

Music, Choreography and Collaborative Processes; Practice as Research in Dance and Theatre Performance; Pedagogy and the Performing Arts; the Performing Arts and Cultural Studies; The Theatricality of Musical Performance; Critical Theory and the Performing Arts; Popular Culture in the Performing Arts; Music and Dance in Non-Western Musical Traditions; The Politics of Participation in the Performing Arts; Musicians and Dancers as Actors; Training Practices for Performance; Signs and Meanings in the Performing Arts; Music, Theatre and Dance in Opera; Preservation, Documentation and the Performing Arts; The Dynamics of Collaboration in the Performing Arts; The Performing Arts as Social Texts.
The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:

(a) a Bachelor’s degree obtained with Second Class Honours or better in the same area or in a closely related area of study as the area of study applied for or

(b) a Bachelor’s degree in the same area or in a closely related area of study as that applied for, with an average mark of not less than 65% in that area of study or

(c) a degree from this or another university, which the Board considers as comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b) or

(d) a professional qualification/qualifications and/or experience deemed by the Board, to satisfy in part, the admission requirements for a taught postgraduate course, provided that applicants may be required to complete a preparatory programme as specified below.

All applicants who are not in possession of a first degree in Dance shall be interviewed and/or auditioned by a board composed of at least three members. Applicants shall be asked to provide evidence of their professional experience in dance by way of writing sample, performance documentation and video. Candidates unable to attend the interview and dance audition in person may arrange to complete the process through electronic means of communication.

Applicants wishing to apply for the Degree mainly by research, shall indicate the provisional title for the dissertation on their application for admission. The application shall include a research proposal as well as a statement by the head of department concerned that applicants possess the training, knowledge and capabilities required for the proposed line of study and research.

Preparatory Programme

Applicants applying in terms of paragraphs (b), (c) and (d) may be required to follow a preparatory programme as specified by the Board. The preparatory programme shall include study-units in the area of study concerned, and may include also study-units which are intended to train students in the competencies required to conduct research work.

During the preparatory programme students shall be required to register for a number of study-units for which a total of not less than 30 ECTS credits and not more than 60 ECTS credits are assigned.

Students shall be required to successfully complete the preparatory programme of study with an average mark of 55% or better prior to their registration for the Course.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2018.

Throughout this programme students will be trained to view an issue from different perspectives and disciplines and learn the technique of moving among them flexibly and effectively. Such an approach is highly valued not only in the creative industry but also in all types of industries more widely.
The knowledge and research techniques attained throughout the programme can be applied in an array of professional contexts and careers including artistic performances, teaching, broadcasting, audio-visual productions, archiving, academic research, cultural industry, cultural tourism, and digital gaming. All these provide ample opportunities for the integration of interdisciplinary research techniques with innovation aimed at the creation of projects employing the performing arts.

The students who complete this programme successfully will be able to participate in academic debate, apply, design, write and publish their research, take part in and take effective decisions about many aspects of art and culture, as leaders and entrepreneurs. Those who chose the practice-as-research route will also learn valuable lessons about the roles and responsibilities of artist-practitioners.
