The M.Sc. in Building Services Engineering is a postgraduate taught programme aimed at developing a specialised skill set that enables engineers to innovate and develop sustainable techniques to transmit back to the building industry.
Standards review and application, underpinning science, research and practical group work projects permeate through the programme required to develop such a skill set.
The delivery of this programme is varied, ranging from practical sessions to guest lectures by experts in their field asked to relate their technical expertise and experience to the upcoming generation of building services engineers. The programme culminates with a final year project brief that enables the candidates to utilise the skill set acquired through the taught and practical sessions for a specific application.
The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) from this University or from any other higher education institution recognized by Senate, obtained with at least Second Class Honours.
In exceptional cases the Admissions Board, on the recommendation of the Board, may admit into the Course applicants not in possession of the qualification listed above, provided that it is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of other relevant academic or professional qualifications and experience that together are deemed to be comparable to the level of a first degree. The admission of applicants under this paragraph may be made conditional on the results of an interview conducted by an interviewing board appointed for the purpose.
The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three persons.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2019.
For more detailed information pertaining to admission and progression requirements please refer to the bye-laws for the course available here.

• Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of active electro-mechanical systems that aid the operation and use of buildings • Identify and integrate key and basic thermofluid and electrical processes associated with building services systems • Outline the basics of fire dynamics • Interpret psychometric charts • Calculate the energy performance of residential and non-residential buildings • Demonstrate basic knowledge of how to manage a building services project • Explain the various methods and criteria associated with fire safety by classifying the fire risk associated with a building • Justify the choice of specific HVAC systems provided that the building requirements, operation, use and status are well understood • Demonstrate knowledge and justify the notion of "connected buildings" and "internet of things" • Formulate adequate public health engineering services by identifying waste water requirements of buildings and associated services • Assess and quantify the operational requirement of an HVAC system through the use of psychometric charts • Compile a risk assessment using established and standardised methods • Choose and specify fire mitigation and suppression requirements • Identify health and safety issues during the design and execution of a building services project • Identify sustainable means and methods of improving buildings through mechanical and electrical engineering systems • Assemble various fire safety mitigation measures • Integrate building engineering systems with existing or proposed buildings from an early design stage • Comply with the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers standards • Synthesise and adhere to legal requirements concerning planning laws and health and safety issues to design and execute building services projects • Compile a building services project brief augmenting various skills acquired during the postgraduate programme
The course is intended for engineers already possessing a first cycle degree in mechanical and/or electrical engineering. The course is also intended for experienced professionals in the field that want to expand their academic credentials and at the same time consolidate their experience.
The programme offers a solid and grounded skill set enabling engineers to assert themselves in the building and construction industry. A construction industry that continuously seeks sustainable means of design, execution and operation; perceives the engineering community as a fundamental pillar in providing the technical expertise to achieve its goal. Engineers pursuing this programme will have a natural comparative advantage in being commissioned with the consultation of various building projects. Moreover the programme exposes the candidates to various niche methods still in their infancy giving a wide-ranging scope to pursue further their academic studies in the area via doctoral programmes and/or other professional development programmes.
