This course is aimed at those professionals who are involved in the assessment of musculoskeletal function. This programme will be delivered through two main aspects: a 10 ECTS Research Methods study unit together with an 80 ECTS supervised independent research as per Faculty of Health Sciences bye-laws that govern this type of programme. This will ensure that students will attain the expertise necessary to perform clinical biomechanics data acquisition and analysis related to their speciality-research.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:

(a) the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) from the Faculty of Health Sciences in an area of study which should be directly related to the area in which the research is to be carried out or

(b) a Bachelor’s degree obtained with at least a Second Class (Honours) in a discipline deemed by the Board as being closely related to the area of study in which the research is to be carried out or

(c) a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) and (b) above,

provided that for the Clinical Biomechanics area of study, applicants in possession of a first degree obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) in a discipline deemed by the Board as being related to the area of study in which the research is to be carried out shall be considered as eligible.

By the end of the programme, students will be able to:

- relate theoretical to practical aspects;
- critically evaluate research in the field;
- develop research protocols utilizing biomechanical tools;
- develop and justify examination protocols based on understanding of the biomechanics of the human body;
- define and carry out an appropriate literature search critically published relevant literature;
- develop and conduct a research project by applying scientific principles, methods and knowledge pertaining to clinical biomechanics;
- apply knowledge of clinical biomechanics to specific pathologies related to the musculo-skeletal system;
- reliably use innovative biomechanical acquisition and measurement bodies during the research process to translate this knowledge - skill to their relevant clinical practice;
- communicate effectively between multiple healthcare professionals the findings which they would have achieved from their research findings.
This programme is intended for registered professionals wishing to work within a specialized area in the field of Clinical Biomechanics or those professionals who wish to perform quality research in this field, which can be combined with other special interests such as paediatrics, geriatrics, diabetes and sports medicine, amongst others.
This master programme provides expertise in a very specific research area in which there is a worldwide lack of available professionals, thus increasing employability prospects both locally and internationally.

Successful students would have the opportunity to proceed to a PhD in a related area of study both locally and abroad.
