The part-time M.Sc. in Mental Health Nursing programme consists of a total of 90 ECTS at Level 5 (Masters Degree) conducted over three years. This programme is aimed at those nurses working in mental health care settings, to enhance their professional roles as nurse educators, researchers, change agents and clinical leaders. It seeks to provide students with the knowledge, confidence and skills to improve their own self development and make a major contribution to professional care.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of:

(a) a Bachelor's degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours in an area of study deemed suitable by the Board or

(b) a degree from this or another university which the Board considers as comparable to the degree indicated in paragraph (a).

Applicants may be required to provide evidence of being in possession of the licence to practice in the register of the profession concerned, as kept by the relevant regulatory council.

Applicants may be required to provide evidence of work experience following registration with the relevant regulatory council in the proposed area of study or area of specialisation, if applicable. The minimum number of years of experience required shall be indicated at the time of the call for applications.

During the first year of the Course, accepted applicants may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment, as detailed in the Occupational Health Protocol approved by the Board, so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

By the end of the programme the students will be able to:

- Apply evidence obtained from research to answer clinical questions and in the formulation and development of potential interventions for selected patient populations
- Transfer skills learnt (e.g. care plans) to a variety of clinical setting
- Evaluate contemporary issues in mental and general health care in order to enhance both professional and clinical development
- Act as a team leader
- Introduce change in clinical and educational practices
- Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in the planning, development and delivery of mental health care programmes
- Demonstrate skills of interpretation, critiquing, analysis, evaluation and inference in the final research study.
This programme enables students to master research, educational and professional mental health skills in order to make a contribution to enhancing clinical practice and service delivery. Graduates may be in a position to take up clinical leadership and/or management and education posts. Mental Health services are expanding all the time in recognition of the huge impact mental health and illness has on society. As a masters level mental health nurse it would be hoped that graduates would take a lead in many of these initiatives. Additionally, they may also take up opportunities for further academic and self development in foreign countries. Graduates will be eligible to undertake the third cycle programme for the fulfillment of a Doctor in Philosophy (PhD).
