The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of a Bachelor degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours in one of the following areas of study:
(a) Science with Physics as a main area of study or (b) Electrical and Electronic Engineering or (c) Mechanical Engineering or (d) Communications and Computer Engineering.
During the first year of the Course, accepted applicants may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment, as detailed in the Occupational Health Protocol approved by the Board, so as to ascertain that they are fit for work which brings students in contact with the clinical environment. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.
Further information, including a schedule of interviews for applicants for courses with a limited number of students and for 'adult learners/mature applicants' (in the case of undergraduate courses), as well as important information on the occupational health protocol, to be submitted by the 30 October 2019, can be accessed here. Highly specialised knowledge in the field of Medical Physics which is expertise in the recognition and correction of less than optimal performance or clinical use of medical devices and the implementation and management of programmes for protection of patients/staff/public/research volunteers from physical agents associated with medical devices (e.g., ionising radiation, strong magnetic fields, lasers). All Medical Physics activities are based on current best evidence or own scientific research when the available evidence is not sufficient. Medical Physicists need to have a critical awareness of knowledge issues in the field and at the interface between physics and medicine.
1. Cognitive skills: specialised skills involved in problem solving, research, reflection, judgement, handling of complexity, communication and innovation. 2. Practical skills: involving manual dexterity in the use of methods, materials, tools and measuring instruments for medical physics applications. 3. Transferable skills: advanced analytical, synthetic, problem solving, mathematical, computing, management, communication, leadership, project management, creative and entrepreneurial skills.
1. Research: assume responsibility in an autonomous manner to: a) Review a particular area of interest in Medical Physics. b) Identify a project and research objectives worthy of attention and which are realizable given the available resources. c) Integrate and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired during the programme to the realization of the research objectives. d) Report and present the findings of the research in the manner specified by the Board of Studies of the programme.
2. Lay the foundations for the following competences: a. Practice the Medical Physics profession responsibly within the legal and ethical boundaries of the profession. b. Take on responsibility at a basic level for the role of Medical Physics Expert and Radiation Protection Expert (Medical) as required by EU legislation. c. Be aware of the importance of maintaining fitness to practise in an autonomous yet responsible manner. d. Be able to work in an inter-professional manner with other healthcare professionals, support staff and service users, their relatives and carers. e. Take responsibility for recognition of less than optimal performance or clinical use of medical devices (identification and elimination of causes, and confirmation that proposed solutions have restored devices and use to acceptable status). f. Take responsibility for the setting up and management of programmes for protection (including dosimetry) of patient/staff/public/research volunteers with respect to the effects of physical agents associated with medical devices (e.g., ionising radiation, strong magnetic fields, lasers). g. Take responsibility for contributing to professional knowledge and practice and for reviewing the performance of teams.
