The University of Malta, University of Glasgow, Lund University, and Instituto Universitário De Lisboa are offering a unique Master of Science in Tourism Development and Culture. This joint degree which will be delivered over 4 semesters, with each semester taking place at a different campus over a 2-year period, is being launched under the ERASMUS MUNDUS scholarship programmes. The course offers an excellent opportunity to develop academic learning and business skills, as well as the confidence to face major challenges ahead such as protecting disappearing cultural heritage, managing visitors and tourism growth in developing regions and interpreting sensitive cultural sites. Students will be given the skills to successfully steer the industry to an increasingly sustainable future. It is designed for people from all parts of the world, and has a truly internationally relevant syllabus with specific academic strengths and international experience and links.

Semester 1

In Semester 1, students will be following the course at the University of Glasgow (Dumfries Campus): Social science analysis of tourism.

 
Semester 2
 
In Semester 2 students will be following the course at the University of Malta: Cultural tourism and heritage.

TTC5006 Practicum in the Cultural Sector 5 ECTS    
TTC5007 Traditions and the Tourism Product 5 ECTS    
TTC5205 Research Methods 2 5 ECTS    
 
Elective Units (Elective units are offered subject to availability, a minimum number of student registrations and time-table constraints)
Students are required to choose three elective study-units from the below:
 
TRS5251 Innovative Tourism Management Practices 5 ECTS    
TTC5100 International Event and Festival Management 5 ECTS    
TTC5203 Intercultural Competencies for Management 5 ECTS    
TTC5300 Tourism Experience Strategy, Policy and Planning 5 ECTS    

 

Semester 1

Students will be following the course at the Lund University: Innovation and sustainability in the tourism industry.

OR

The University Institute of Lisbon: Tourism management including urban, events, retail and hospitality (Optional non-credit placement available).

Semester 2

Students will be following the course at one of the following Universities: Glasgow, Malta, Lund or Lisbon: Independent study, dissertation.

This programme of study is governed by the Master of Science in Tourism Development and Culture - M.Sc. - Degree Course Regulations, 2019 under the auspices of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify literature based (internet and printed) research on this and related tourism themes.
  • Be familiar with written and non-written sources for the study of niche markets associated with culture and heritage.
  • Draw on written and non-written sources for the study of cities as cultural heritage.
  • Write a substantial research paper through the appreciation and understanding of the deep meaning and long legacy of the walls, streets, monuments, spires, symbols and communities that make up the physical and cultural urban environments.
  • Draw on written and non-written sources for the study of traditions and customs in a local, regional (Mediterranean/European) and global context.

By the end of the course, you will be able to enter a career in the tourism development and culture sector. Access to further studies is available at doctorate level at the University of Malta or in a foreign institution abroad.
