Fine Arts

Applicants are required to submit a portfolio which shall be assessed during an interview held by an interviewing board, which shall be composed of at least three members. Applicants who are unsuccessful in the interview shall not be admitted to the Course.

Fine Arts

All applicants choosing the Fine Arts area of study are required to sit for an interview which will be held on a date which will be announced in due course. Once announced, this date cannot be changed.

Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an interview, held on a date which will be announced in due course. Once announced, this date cannot be changed. The closing date for receipt of applications from applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' is 31 August 2024 at 2pm.

Applicants may also be required to submit a Learning Portfolio. Further information about the Portfolio will be forwarded to applicants.

The programme of study in Fine Arts you provide you with the academic opportunity to learn about the array of fine arts in its variety of practical and artistic applications. By learning about the historical and traditional art of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, you will be well equipped to understand how Modern art carries on, builds upon or debunks the artistic expressions of past centuries. By learning about key artistic historic figures and their unique contributions, you will gain a deeper cultural appreciation for different impacted art forms, as you will have the chance to learn about the art modes of photography and sculpting in both practice and theory. We also encourage you to participate in the Erasmus+ mobility programme, for a more holistic and multicultural academic journey.

The undergraduate programme in History will enrich your historic knowledge on a global scale. During the course, apart from learning about local and national history through social, economic, warfare and other perspectives, we will also provide you with a wholistic historic lens of Western, European and Non-European countries. By learning history on an academic level, you will possess a deep appreciation and a heightened sense of awareness of contemporary international and local affairs through your firm grasp of historic patterns, events and foundations. We also encourage you to participate in the Erasmus+ programme, as we believe that a multicultural and diversified learning experience will give you a better learning experience.


Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

Fine Arts

Upon finishing the course, you will be able to:

  • Conduct research and write critically about a subject matter related to the fine arts.
  • Effectively express concepts and engage in discussions in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary atmosphere.
  • Have a deep understanding behind the meaning of a work of art, while also perceiving its role in a social macrocosmic context.
  • Redefine and analyse contemporary art through your awareness of its multiple unique representations across time and different regions.
  • Develop an autonomous identity and style through the practice of original art.

History

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Conduct and carry out critical academic research in a professional academic manner necessary at an undergraduate level.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary discussions, where your invaluable knowledge on the subject matter will be a necessity.
  • Recall key historic people and events and their respective contributions.
  • Express your thoughts coherently, concisely and clearly in written and oral mediums through a heightened sense of intellectual integration in the subject matter.
  • Understand better the contingent relationship between present and past through your awareness of current international and local affairs.

As a fine arts graduate, you will have a number of career opportunities, both locally and abroad, in which you can employ your invaluable artistic skill-set. These include roles such as an art therapist, community arts worker, advertising art director, fine artist, graphic designer, conservator, illustrator, animator and exhibition designer. If you are interested in furthering your studies, or are considering an academic profession, then we encourage you to enrol in one of our local postgraduate courses for a honed and holistic academic experience.


History

As a graduate of this programme of study you will be employable, both locally and internationally, as an archivist, heritage manager, museum curator or education officer, academic researcher, policy officer, information officer, human resources officer and as a broadcast journalist.
