The programme in HLT aims to attract students from diverse academic backgrounds, both students who studied languages and/or the Humanities at post-secondary level, and those who studied science subjects. Because of the diversity of the target population, the first year of the programme aims to provide students from different academic backgrounds with the basic knowledge and technical know-how they require to approach the subject in more depth in the second and third years of the course. In the first year, therefore, a number of ‘foundational’ courses are planned in discrete mathematics, statistics, programming, and the foundations of linguistic theory. The emphasis in the second and third years is on Linguistics and Technology, with the courses exploring various areas of importance and interest such as Corpus Linguistics, Natural Language Processing and Text Mining and Information Extraction, just to mention a few.
Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2019.

The programme therefore enables students to acquire a diversity of skills. Specifically, students reading for a BSc in HLT will acquire a grounding in practical, applied areas such as statistical analysis and computer programming, as well as more theoretically oriented areas which require abstract thinking and reasoning.
Students will be expected to develop a number of personal, cognitive and communication skills, in addition to subject-specific ones. In particular, the programme aims to encourage development in the following areas:
• Personal skills: exploring personal strengths and weaknesses, setting personal development targets, developing generic learning skills (learning to learn), reviewing completed work; • Communicative skills: learning how to learn, personal autonomy, working with others; • Cognitive skills: problem identification and definition, exploring optimal and alternate solutions, understanding of methodologies, critical analysis and reflection, objective reasoning, lateral thinking, reviewing the success of an approach to a problem, investigating "real-life" scenarios (problem-based learning); • Subject skills: the use of information technology, integrating numerical and non-numerical information, writing and evaluating computer programmes for specific tasks, producing documents electronically, processing information using spreadsheets and/or databases, review the use of computer-based tools, use learning technologies.
Students who studied languages and/or the Humanities at post-secondary level, and those who studied science subjects.
The programme includes two obligatory work placements, or internships, with local industry, with which we will actively be seeking partnerships. The first placement occurs in the first year and is a short ‘introductory’ placement worth 4 ECTS. The second takes place in the 2nd year and has a value of 6 ECTS. The internships are primarily aimed at preparing the students for the world of work by providing them with the opportunity to have 'hands-on' experience within a real working environment, thereby also gaining direct knowledge about the practical day-to-day operation of a company or agency in the ICT and technology sector. Moreover, they will be able to better judge their job opportunities and develop contacts which will stand them in good stead once they finish their degree and enter the job market.
The proposed course incorporates and fosters a degree of collaboration of the university with industry that will be advantageous to both sectors, and, in particular, to students who successfully complete the course, as well as to companies that decide to ‘invest’ in potential future recruits.
