The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of:

  1. a Bachelor degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours or with at least Category II in an area of study deemed suitable by the Board or
  2. a Bachelor degree obtained with Third Class Honours or with Category III provided that they have obtained other qualifications, including relevant experience, following their first cycle degree.

Admission of applicants under paragraph (b) shall be made conditional on the result of an interview.

The MA in Museum Education will prepare you to act as an educator in museums and other heritage sites. You will be exposed to ideas and trained to work with a variety of visitors to museums including school children, youth and adults. You will be exposed to such areas as research methods with regard to heritage, pedagogical theories and practice (especially through a placement), elements of educational thought, working on heritage and museum education projects with target groups, the idea of heritage and museum narrative as contested terrains, the cultural politics of museums and museum education, and different types of museum. There will be courses in research methods specifically with a cultural, environmental and scientific heritage focus, educational thought, interpretation of historical sources for school children, learning with adults, cultural politics, community education, curriculum development etc- all areas with a special focus on museums and heritage sites.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Arts in Museum Education - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

This programme will be collaborative and will allow you to take units in the Cultural heritage MA programme, thus allowing for a pooling of resources. By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Employ your sound knowledge of pedagogy, cultural, environmental and scientific heritage and communications with school children and adults inside museums and other heritage sites.
  2. Adapt to different kinds of visitors, namely older adults, younger adults, adolescents and children.
  3. Develop a problem-posing approach to knowledge.
  4. Develop a critical approach to cultural and scientific issues.
  5. Understand culture/heritage as potential sites of controversy.
  6. Make use of different technologies of learning and communicate with clarity.
